Design Research for the project: Soften the Traces of Time – The Community that Cares
This project promotes intergenerational living as a response to supporting older people in Newcastle upon Tyne; a population who are facing challenges of social segregation and loneliness while trying to maintain their independence. This mixed-use development comprises the creative re-purposing of the historic Grade II* listed Keelmen’s Hospital, and the construction of new residences, workshops and recreational space. It is an in-depth study of design research that explores the underlying changes in the structure of society, demographics and the challenges for an ageing population; and offers options for supportive physical environments.
